The Union Won Alternative Work Schedules for SEC Employees

Your life is better with AWS! NTEU's negotiating efforts brought alternative work schedules to the SEC, including flexible bands (which permit you to adjust your start and end times) and 4-10 and 5-4-9 schedules (which allow you to work four 10-hour days each week, and take one day off, or to work eight 9-hour days every two weeks, and then take one day off). At present, over 40% of SEC non-management employees work on either a 5-4-9 or a 4-10 schedule.

It is widely recognized that the job schedules of many workers are often in conflict with the schedules of their dependents. As an example, employees who work a rigid a 9-to-5 job schedule may find it difficult to take elderly relatives to important medical appointments. Similarly, parents who hold down a 9-to-5 job may find that before and after school care is either not available or it does not fill the gaps in the children’s and parents’ schedules. Alternative work schedules such as 4-10 and 5-4-9 help to deal with these issues, leading to a better adjusted workforce at the agency.

The dues and support from union members have made it possible for NTEU to increase the number and quality of the alternative work schedules that are available to you. Please support these efforts by joining Chapter 293.
