October 2008: Kathy Cash has had an interesting journey on her way to becoming an NTEU member; she was told by SEC management that she couldn’t join, but she fought her way in.

Chief Steward Katie NixSummer 2008: Katie Nix is our Chief Steward, and as such, she works with all of the Chapter 293 Stewards scattered around the country. Katie has been a union activist since we first began the drive to unionize in late 1998, and before becoming Chief Steward, she served as a member of the Chapter bargaining team that negotiated our current Collective Bargaining Agreement. Many of you know Katie as a union official, but that is only one small part of her longstanding commitment to making the Commission a better workplace.

Katie began working as an examiner in the Division of Corporation Finance in early 1970. When she came to the agency, her mother, Kathleen Chiera (old timers will remember her as “Kay”), had already been working in Corp. Fin. since 1966—and would continue to do so until 1986. In Katie’s own words, her mother “loved working here and so do I.” Katie has held a number of positions in Corp. Fin. over the past 38 years, including Branch Chief. Currently she works in the Information Technology group.

January 2008: This month Chapter 293 Works interviewed Azam Riaz, who is a Chapter 293 steward working in the New York Regional Office.

Azam began his career at the SEC after receiving his MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University seven years ago. He started as a compliance examiner and is now a staff accountant. His job includes conducting and participating in examinations of investment advisors, investment companies and hedge funds.

November 2007: Jackie Rivas is a D.C. area native. She was born in Annapolis, Maryland, but grew up in the Virginia suburbs. She enjoys the area because of its international flair and diverse cultural offerings. “There are so many fun things to choose from, exhibits at the Smithsonian museums and the various art galleries, film festivals, the solar decathlon, wine-tastings at the Maison Française, and all the ethnic restaurants to name just a few,” she recently said. Her international interest stems from time spent living in Madrid, Spain, during college.

August 2007: This month, Chapter 293 Works interviewed James Fay, an NTEU member who works as an enforcement attorney in the Boston Regional Office. James was born outside of Boston, but grew up in Florida. He received a BA and an MA in history from Providence College, and he considered pursuing an academic career in history. He ultimately received a JD from Boston College Law School and became an attorney.

June 2007: NTEU includes in its membership a large number of talented, motivated, hard working SEC employees. In this issue, we focus our attention on Shirlie Maultsby, a Chapter 293 member who works at Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

December 2006: The success of Chapter 293 has always depended greatly upon the talent and commitment of its members and leaders. In this issue, we briefly spotlight the valued contributions of Chapter 293 Steward Sue Hannan.
