NTEU Opposition to Mandatory Furloughs

01/14/2011

1/14/11: On January 12, Rep. Mike Coffman (CO) introduced H.R. 270, a bill in the House of Representatives calling for two weeks of mandatory unpaid leave for federal employees. This bill would require federal employees to be furloughed for a total of two weeks in Fiscal Year 2012, which begins in October of 2011. The measure has been referred to the House Administration Committee, as well as the Committees on Oversight and Government Reform and the Judiciary.

NTEU opposes this ill-advised measure and will work against it. The Union believes it unfairly singles out federal employees in an effort to correct the nation’s fiscal challenges. A mandatory furlough will result in reduced government services to the nation and could likely lead to more contracting out, which often costs the taxpayers more money. NTEU will urge members of the House to reject the mandatory furlough bill.
