Government Shutdown
12-19-2024

Last night, Republicans reversed their position on the bipartisan deal for a continuing resolution (CR) that they had announced earlier this week, raising the risk of a shutdown when government funding expires on Friday night.

Even though Speaker Mike Johnson negotiated the deal, along with Senate Republican leaders, Republicans pulled their support for the agreement after President-elect Trump announced his opposition. With government funding set to expire at midnight on Friday, it is unclear how Speaker Johnson plans to move forward to ensure funding before the deadline and avoid a government shutdown.

It is ridiculous that Congress has once again waited until right before the deadline to do their jobs to ensure the government remains funded. If they do not get a deal before tomorrow night but pass a CR over the weekend, there would be minimal impact for employees and agencies. However, if it continues into next week, agencies will begin shutdown procedures and employees will be notified about whether they should report to work and other next steps.

NTEU will keep you posted on further developments.
